7 Tips On How To Stay Safe In The Forest

Safety should always be our top priority whether indoors or outdoors. The outdoors, no matter how majestic they seem to be, is also full of dangerous elements that could hurt you if you’re not careful. Thus, the most efficient way of preventing mishaps is to prepare ahead for the trip – know the area, watch the weather forecast, pack adequate food and water, and make sure your body’s in tiptop condition. Here are some tips on how to stay safe in the forest to further help you out.

Tip #1: Travel with a companion

If it’s your first time to hike or camp out, have someone to accompany you, especially if you’ll be wandering through forested areas. Aside from it’s more convenient and easier to share the load with someone (some may not agree with us), it’s crucial to have a companion for emergency purposes. Of course, you wouldn’t want to face the elements alone, do you?

Furthermore, tell a family member or friend about your upcoming trip and travel itinerary. Include details such as the duration of the journey, your route, and other crucial information. Also, note emergency numbers in your phone or paper and know the nearest ranger station so that if something unfortunate happens, you and your companion can immediately call for help.

If you are going through a remote area, ask a local or forest ranger who is familiar with the area to go with you or at least give you information before setting out. Also, bear in mind not to enter closed areas.

Tip #2: Wear appropriate clothing

Choose your clothing according to the season. Typical clothing items designed for the outdoors include a comfortable pair of climbing boots, sweat pants or thermal leggings, fleece or nylon jacket, a wide hat, and dry-fit long-sleeved tops.

Wearing appropriate clothing makes a more comfortable travel. For instance, long-sleeved tops can shield you from insects and bugs while thermal leggings can easily dry up when splashed with water, eliminating the inconvenience brought by heavy, wet pants.

Also, make sure to stash some insect repellents and a handy first-aid kit.

Tip #3: Learn some survival skills


The forest is basically the wilderness. There are insufficient resources in the forest, so you have to be resourceful and skillful.

Tip #4: Learn basic first aid

An accident or emergency could just be around the corner, that’s why people of all ages should consider learning basic first aid. The daily news is filled with these awful accidents, and they can happen even if you’re at home, at work, or worse, while enjoying the outdoors.

You can catch a bad allergy, suffer a heart attack, fracture your foot, or hyperventilate. Learning first aid will teach you how to treat these conditions and more while waiting for help to arrive.

Also, it will improve your confidence knowing that you have some knowledge of how to execute particular procedures rather than panicking and being anxious when a casualty happens.

Tip #5: Secure a map, compass, or GPS


In this day and age, technological navigation devices are very handy. It’s common sense to use them to your advantage. Of course, it’d be fun to explore off-the-beaten paths, but danger lurks everywhere.

A GPS will be of great help because it gives you an overview of the area, road options, your position, and the trip distance.

There’s also the map and compass. Before setting out, get a map of the area from the tourism center or forest ranger station and study it first.

Tip #6: Be alert all the time

Always be mindful of your surroundings. Walk and tread paths slowly and carefully. The forest is dotted with slippery areas that may cause you to trip over accidentally. Make sure you’re wearing the right shoes with excellent traction to help you stay on the ground at all times.

Also, don’t go full free-spirit running into the woods because there are dangling branches and rough terrains that make running sort of fatal.

Likewise, that grand pile of leaves may hide slippery or muddy areas underneath so be careful when stepping into them.

Tip #7: Set up camp before dark

Traveling and setting up camp should be done during broad daylight. Aside from it’s hard to set up the tent and other equipment with just a flashlight, you also won’t have the opportunity to scout the area for the best and safe camping spots.

Choosing a good site to camp may mean the difference between getting a good night’s sleep and restless tossing and turning.

It’s worth noting to set up the tent away from edge of cliffs, meters away from water bodies, valley floors, and on sloping areas. Choose dry and well-drained spots, flat and even grounds, and areas exposed to the wind for ventilation.

Also, stay away from places with lone trees as they can attract lightning. Camping near rivers and lakes may sound like a good idea because who wouldn’t want to wake up to a view of majestic waters? However, these places attract bugs and nocturnal animals.
